Press Release

Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to present The Citadel Series, an exhibition of new abstract paintings by Bay Area artist Donald Feasél. Feasél’s latest works reveal a shift away from the minimal linear works of previous series to compositions flooded with rich hues of swirling color. Created using poured acrylic paint stains on unprimed canvas, the results flow and flare in intricately detailed organic patterns. The exhibition will be on view through May 30, 2020.

Known for his previous gestural black and white line works, Feasél’s new paintings find him exploring gradations of saturated colors made with thinned acrylic paint that has seeped into the canvas. Full of movement and sumptuous tonalities, Feasél also relies on chance, risk, and serendipitous combination as part of his creative process, which push the limits of his control over the work’s creation. Replete with rich, vibrant color, Feasél has employed an underlying grid structure in many of these works, providing a counterpoint to the flowing rhythms of the paint. Minimal in their structure, but energetic in the formation, Feasél’s works blend the aesthetics of gestural abstraction with the principles of reductive painting to startling effect.

Donald Feasél is an accomplished Bay Area painter. Originally from Los Angeles, he received his BA from UCLA in 1976, and studied with Elmer Bischoff at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his MFA in 1984. He is currently a Lecturer at San Jose State University, having previously taught at Santa Rosa Junior College, the San Francisco Art Institute, and California College of the Arts. Feasél’s work has been included in numerous Bay Area exhibitions, and he is represented in the collections of the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, Napa, CA, Santa Rosa Junior College, CA, and the San Jose Museum of Art, CA. This is his eighth solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
