 Nellie King Solomon: Folded Pours

San Francisco artist Nellie King Solomon opens an exhibition of recent paintings at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, November 1, with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30 pm. Known for her colorful, spontaneous abstractions, Solomon continues to investigate movement and chance in her energetic, gestural works.

For her second exhibition at Brian Gross Fine Art, Solomon shows a series of new improvisational paintings in works measuring four feet square. In these most recent explorations, two layers of Mylar work in conjunction with one another, increasing the depth of field through the dynamic interplay of varying opaque and transparent colors. These bold, experimental works of iridescent blues, violets and greens manifest themselves in striking fields of controlled chaos.

Solomon's process involves pouring paint, which pools and flows along the surface of the Mylar directed by the topography she sets up on her table below the working surface. She mixes various combinations of acrylic, ink, dyes and acrylic mediums to achieve distinct variations in flows and translucencies. The title, Folded Pours, refers to a working methodology the artist has developed which involves folding a long sheet of Mylar in on itself in order to create the two halves of the overlay composition. In this way, the folded pours reflect back in on themselves, paint facing paint, and the first mark made becomes the first mark seen.

Nellie King Solomon was born in San Francisco, California in 1971. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts, and her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has exhibited throughout the United States and currently teaches painting and drawing at Stanford University as well as at CCA in San Francisco. The exhibition continues through December 22, 2007.
