 Teo González: New Work

Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by New York artist Teo González, opening on May 9, 2015. On view will be eight works meticulously painted through seamless fades of shifting color coupled with thousands of contrasting gridded dots. In New Work, González’s signature field paintings utilize a dramatic shift between light and dark to achieve a new level of intensity and gravity. New Work will be on view through July 3, 2015.

In González’s tenth solo exhibition at Brian Gross Fine Art, he continues to develop his instinctive translation of loosely gridded arrangements. González now incorporates distinct horizon lines that divide the space and emphasize each contrasting color. Hovering above dramatic shifts between creamy whites and deep blues, González draws thousands of tiny dots, ranging in thickness, and outlined by delicate circles. These precise arrangements, varied in size, density and placement, result in stirring compositions that oscillate with the viewers’ shifting gaze. Pathways are tracked, but never end, patterns start to emerge, but never materialize. González guides these organic rhythms, vibrating and pulsating across the surface of the canvas, while they twist and turn within its borders.

In earlier work known to San Francisco gallery goers, González painted a strict grid of acrylic drops, the number of which he methodically counted. González then dropped the strict grid and allowed a looser, more intuitive approach to his field of dots. This body of work continues that evolution, focusing on color relationships and the interplay of light and dark. González removes any sense of directionality, as up and down begin to fade into one another and space becomes immeasurable. Intriguing color relationships emerge through unique combinations of foreground and background tones. Bold representations of light and dark, forward and back, shallow and deep, produce dynamic fields that engage and captivate the viewer. González states, “More than creating an illusion, my intention has been to present background and foreground as separate entities working together”.

Teo González was born in Zaragoza, Spain in 1964. He received his BFA from California State University, Bakersfield, and currently lives in New York City. He has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. In 2014 González was featured in a solo exhibition at The Gabarron Foundation in New York City. His work can be found in the public collections of the Achenbach Foundation, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and the San Diego Museum of Art.
