Ruth Pastine opens her third solo exhibition, Convergence, at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, April 3 with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30 pm. New paintings will be on display, which continue Pastine's investigations of the perception of color and light. The exhibition will continue through May 17. The perceptual experience of color and light are the focus of paintings by Ruth Pastine. Each painting is oil on canvas with the careful mixing of complementary colors in a convergence of warm and cool. The result is subtle, optical shifts that slowly emerge as light seemingly radiates from within. In brilliant hues of blue, vibrant reds or subtle white, the smooth surfaces of these works belie the rigorous, layered painting of thousands of tiny strokes that allow for the seamless color transitions. Without evidence of a discernible hand, an immateriality arises that allows the viewer to experience perception itself. Ruth Pastine, born in New York City, received her B.F.A. from Cooper Union, New York and an M.F.A. from Hunter College, New York. The recipient of numerous awards, Pastine has exhibited widely in the United States and in Japan. She currently lives and works in Ojai, California. |
